Letter: Your view - Fear factor.

Byline: W. Hayburn

WHY was John Menzies, who pursued and caught an eight-year-old after his car windscreen was hit with a snowball, brought to court in the first place?

The reason is simple - the jobsworth syndrome.

The police, fiscals and crown office are all afraid to make a decision and are happy to just pass the buck to somebody else.

They need to use some form of sensible logic in these matters, like the sheriff did by admonishing him.

There are a number of incidents where this happens, but fear is the common factor here and they might be criticised and lose brownie points in their careers.
