Letter: Your Shout - Doug should cast mind back to '83.

Byline: T FISHER

AT this crucial time for the Villa, it is worth remembering what happened last time the ownership was sold.

In 1983 the Bendall family, with 25 per cent of the shares, and Doug Ellis, with 15 per cent of the shares, were locked in conflict.

At the AGM that year in the old Witton Lane Stand I made a personal plea for the two groups to combine in the interests of the club. A few days later the Bendalls sold their shares to Ellis and that 40 per cent gave him control. The rest is history.

I would now appeal to him to do what he said he wanted to do in 1983 - sell the club to people who are locally rooted and have the interests of the club at heart.

We do not want the club to be part of an American power play, a Swedish ego trip or a shadowy consortium from the Middle East.

This is a West Midland club which should be run by local people who are willing to listen to the fans. We have had enough of being treated with contempt. It is time for a new start.
