Letter: Your Say - Misinformed on pubs.
THE attitude of recent correspondents towards the 24-hour licensing regulations is indicative of the general level of misinformation surrounding his law.
Only a very small number of premises have taken out 24-hour licenses, of which the vast majority are definitely not town centre pubs. The businesses that take out these licenses tend to be airport and station pubs, as they get a steady stream of custom throughout both the night and daytime.
Other big beneficiaries, I believe, have been supermarkets, although as these are typically off rather than on-license, I'm not too sure of their status.
Very, very few typical pubs have opted to take up 24-hour licensing, thus binge drinking can only have been affected by this law in areas that have supermarkets that are open all day, which I suspect are few and far between.
