Letter: Your Say - G B Butler that people should exercise.

Byline: MARTIN CALLANAN

I AGREE with G B Butler that people should exercise their democratic right to vote.

But ten years of New Labour has left the electorate deeply cynical about politicians.

In recent months we've seen a U-turn on an EU referendum, a capitulation on rural Post Offices and an end to the 10p rate of income tax which was designed to help the poorest and most vulnerable.

It's hardly surprising fewer people bother to vote when the Government they elected treats them with such contempt.

But nothing will change unless people do go out and vote - and have the courage to look beyond this region's traditionally fierce support for Labour.
