Letter: Your Say - Do as they say...

Byline: COUNCILLOR JACKIE ELDER

SO the Mayor's response to our continuing objection to the way we backbenchers are being treated in council (Mayoral Response To Councillors' Boycott, News, 18.10.08) is to come back and fight.

We have been trying to fight for the rights of our constituents for years and have constantly met with the same barracking and contempt from the "ruling Labour clique" who will not countenance anything short of complete compliance with everything they say and do.

They are not going to give an inch and yet expect us to come back and act as if everything is fine. Well, that's not possible because we have a mandate from our constituents to voice their queries and worries. We are not in the chamber for our own sakes but as representatives of thousands of voters, so when they insult us they insult our constituents.

Until they give us a level playing field, therefore, there is no point in our even considering fighting.

They do not want a fair fight anyway. They want total sovereignty and, more frighteningly for all those who took the trouble to go out and vote for us, they will not stop until we are worn down to such an extent that we have not the stomach left to fight and every single councillor in Middlesbrough is Labour.
