Letter: Your Say - Ad nauseam.

Byline: Mary Mulligan

IS ANYONE else left slack-jawed at the latest advertising campaign for the city?

The Hawaiian shirt-wearing Wilbur, complete with Englishman's idea of a Southern accent, is a racist, stereotyped character and has been paid for by the city council.

I was absolutely stunned when I first saw the adverts and I can't believe anyone seriously thought it was a good idea.

What next? A tight-fisted Scotsman saying how cheap the bargains are? A dirty old man in a raincoat extolling the virtues of the lap dancing clubs and massage parlours? Please shoot Wilbur before any American starts to think we believe they're all like that and fire the idiots who thought that this campaign was worth spending taxpayers' money on.
