Letter: YOUR SHOUT - Property to let was a disgrace.

Byline: JACK JOHNSON

I LIVE in the west end of Newcastle and recently had the misfortune to visit a property to let in the Benwell area, during which the landlord showed a friend of mine around a flat that is one of several he owns.

It was absolutely disgusting and he was asking for pounds 420 per month rent.

The flat was strewn with, well you name it and it was there, and when asked about the mess, the answer was "throw it in the backyard".

Also the walls and ceilings were in a really bad state of repair and windows were broken windows. How can a property be let in these circumstances? Housing benefit will be paid out by the local council with not even a check from the authorities, such as environmental health, being carried out first.
