ANDY Kelly's report on Liverpool's Fact arts centre is wrong in r espectto the 051 Cinema (Daily Post, February 6).

The much-lamented Merseyside Film Institute in Bluecoat Chambers was the leading ``art house'' cinema for a period spanning 6 0 years.

It was the 051 Cinema in Mount Pleasant that put the Institute out of business by poaching its membership, and trying to outscreen its programmes.

The 051 building was a disaster from day one , and I should know, as I opened it for the Star Circuit in 1977.

The public never liked the building or its three cinemas, which were built on the cheap and approached up a staircase from street level.

The building had several changes of ownership before becoming the 051.

Art-house cinema, which is the polite term for foreign films with sub-titles, has existed on Merseyside for many years.

Apart from the Institute, which was the leader in this field, similar films have been shown at the Philharmonic Hall, Hope Hall, Jacey Cinema in Clayton Square, the Pigalle Film Club - Shakespeare Theatre and the David Lewis Theatre.

I have the programmes. And, of course, we must not forget the Continental Cinema, Wallasey.

Good luck to the Fact centre. Mike Taylor, Art house projectionist for 22 years, Allerton, Liverpool
