Letter: Voice of the North - Creeping xenophobia infecting UK politics.
AS the recently selected Green Party candidates for the 2009 European Parliament elections, we welcome the news at the end of last week that the anti-immigrant, far-right political group in the parliament has collapsed.
The very existence of this group in the parliament, while it may have represented some citizens' views, was a blot on democracy. We hope there will be no such support for such groups, which preach bigotry and hatred, in the next European elections.
As Greens we are determined to stand up to the creeping xenophobia that is infecting British politics, often fuelled by an irresponsible media. Whilst the traditional parties engage in an anti-immigrant "arms race", the Green Party is proud to speak for the majority of decent British citizens who recognise the need for tolerance, truth and transparency in this very divisive debate.
