Letter: Viewpoints - Tories clutching at sleaze straws.

Byline: Clive Sydenham

SO Mr Nutt believes he has some reasons to condemn Labour for sleaze (Viewpoints, March 5).

He should know that the only time I get an overwhelming stench of sleaze in my nostrils is when I read the wildly hypocritical bleating of Tories clutching at straws.

Bernie Ecclestone's pounds 1m was returned to him, unlike the pounds 2mbeing given to the Tories every year by Lord Ashcroft.

He goes on to mention John Prescott and Robin Cook and their affairs.

Incidentally Mr Cook married his secretary, Prescott apologised to Parliament, and Mr Mandelson resigned.

Of course Mr Nutt doesn't mention the indiscretions of John Major, Edwina Currie, Tim Yeo, David Mellor or Cecil Parkinson.

Then we had Alan Clark. Not only was he the only MP ever accused of being drunk at the dispatch box, in 1983, he also had many infidelities.

I have also given you four names of Tories who have resided in HM Prisons or are still there.

What you call Cheriegate is more nonsense. Cherie Blair is not an MP and what she did with her money, as long as it was legal, was nothing to do with you or me and certainly nothing to do with the Labour Party.

Jo Moore was not a member of the Government. Her remark was deplorable as she herself admitted.

The issue of Lord Irvine's wallpaper was hardly sleaze but really stupid.

There is the old chestnut of the dodgy dossier which was endorsed by the majority of MPs from both sides of the House and has been subject to two Parliamentary inquiries and two independent inquiries. All arrived at the same conclusion: no case to answer. But then if the Angel Gabriel agreed with the inquiries, I'm sure Mr Nutt wouldn't.
