Letter: Viewpoints - AMs should reconsider.

Byline: Robin A Brace

MANY people will be amazed that the Welsh Assembly has chosen to identify themselves with staunchly anti-Christian values.

I refer to your article 'Blasphemous Poetry Given AMs' Go-Ahead' (South Wales Echo, Saturday, November 15).

In this somewhat stunning article, AMs Lorraine Barrett and Peter Black are quoted as having invited Patrick Jones to the Assembly in order to recite his insulting anti-Christian poetry in that setting, in response to Waterstone's highly meritable decision to cancel such a "reading" in their store.

The whole tone of the article is to suggest that Christian beliefs are some very odd thing which are only held by Mr Stephen Green and by his Christian Voice organisation.

The truth of the matter is that many thousands of people here in South Wales share the same beliefs and views and would consider that the Welsh Assembly, representing as it does a small nation with a very strong Christian tradition, should at least partly reflect those views and that tradition in their general behaviour.

Incredible, therefore, that this Assembly is apparently going to devote some time listening to anti-Christian propaganda in the name of "free speech".

Many of those who voted these people into their comfortable positions of power may feel that is an incredible move and that Ms Barrett and Mr Black should reconsider their strident behaviour.

The article quotes a hysterical response from "Liberty" which does not seem to reflect the facts of the situation.

Is it not strange that most of those who so often scream about "free speech" seem so determined to attack Christianity at almost every opportunity?
