Letter: VOICE OF THE NORTH - Get the facts right about acupuncture.

PATIENTS have alerted me to the fact that there exists amongst the physiotherapy profession an inaccurate stance regarding acupuncture practised by fully qualified traditional acupuncturists. I can only hope that the problem is not endemic. A pregnant lady who I had been treating for sciatica was told by her physio that he didn't think acupuncture in pregnancy was safe.

Another patient was told that after having her mini stroke she should not come for acupuncture because it can trigger another stroke. She followed their instructions and called me some months later.

Another pregnant lady was told that she shouldn't have acupuncture in pregnancy and was asked to think about how she would feel if her baby died after an acupuncture session.

I am calling for physiotherapists to refer to fully qualified acupuncturists before advising patients incorrectly and causing them unnecessary worry.

Traditional acupuncture as practised by members of the British Acupuncture Council is an extremely safe, effective and complete system of medicine. Members train to degree level with a minimum of three years' full time study, and adhere to strict codes of safe practice and professional conduct.

There is an increasing body of research evidence which shows how helpful acupuncture can be for many conditions, including during pregnancy and for stroke patients. In addition, traditional acupuncture can play an important role in maintaining general, all round, good health and wellbeing.

Anyone interested can contact the British Acupuncture Council for advice and information on where to find a fully qualified acupuncturist locally. Call 020 8735 0400 or go to
