Letter: The public sector make buses work.

Byline: CHRIS YOUETT

Dear Editor, - I have only just got over the shock of the recent letter from Travel West Midlands PR supremo Coun Phil Bateman who claimed that local authorities shouldn't have any more control over buses as they don't understand them.

I have never ever seen such blue-pencil cheek from a very highly paid "suit" from the bus industry.

Sorry Phil, but the only two parts of the country where bus usage is rising significantly is in London and the East Midlands where the main operators are controlled by the public sector.

I was one of the few people who voted against selling off the former municipal bus operation in the Centro area to the management.

Apart from rewarding mediocre officers, the management only paid half the true worth.

I believe that most local authorities have a very good idea of just how badly Travel West Midlands is actually run - and what is needed to grow passenger numbers.

Regarding his other suggestion that councillors and ratepayers don't understand the need for bus lanes, this is particularly silly. When did Coun Bateman last address key decision-makers and stakeholders in the TUC, CBI or the main parties on the benefits? He is unusually shy on this point.

All this proves is what growing numbers of his political colleagues on all sides of the region's council chambers are realising: vide, it is Coun Bateman who is the real problem.
