Letter: Ruddock's style.

Sir - Gareth Thomas's account in the Western Mail (October 26, 27 & 29) made interesting reading and almost convinced me to buy his book.

However, I had enough sense to sit back and consider the things he said about Mike Ruddock's style of management. I came to the conclusion that Thomas's comments overlooked the fact that the players who made up the Welsh team at the time were our senior and most experienced.

Therefore, in my view Ruddock's softly, softly approach would have been the right one. Imposed discipline of the type Thomas was expecting would have been inappropriate because, like Ruddock, I would have expected the Welsh players to have been sufficiently self-disciplined.

I also think that Gareth Thomas and other more senior players could have done something more positive to stem signs of flagging morale and team spirit before talking to others
