Letter: People of merit.

Byline: Joyce Exley

COUNCILLOR Ben Williams (Letters,April 16)belie ves that a democratic country promotes only people of merit to positions of responsibility and power. So I wonder what merits he finds in George Bush that entitles him to the US Presidency.

Presumably America has a written constitution, a safeguard against dictatorship, according to Cllr Williams.

Why then did he force the invasion of Iraq upon theUS when half of its citizens were against it?

The world has numerous dangerous presidents. So I am a monarchist in an era when it's fashionable to deride our Royal Family on the slightest pretext.

Joyce Exley, Aigburth
