Letter: Mailbag - Road record.
I HAVE just been down to Birkby Hall Road, where a considerable amount of work has been carried out over the past few months. The curbstones have been re-set, work on the drains have been carried out, the road was stripped and re-surfaced, that leaves only the road markings to be done.
I have followed the teams of workers as they carried out the work on a number of roads in the area and have photographed these roads - the men and machines, as the work progressed.
I have learned a great deal about the work required to transform bad roads into good ones and have chatted with those there, as I recorded what they were doing.
So when I saw the road almost completed, I was really impressed by the quality of the latest work and was also pleased because I have waited two years since I bought some tubes of yellow line-marker - and ringed the pot-holes and larger damaged areas and they wanted to know my name. I looked at the spray can - the can was yellow- so I replied I was the "Yellow Pimpernel".
The name "Yellow Pimpernel" became my trademark.
I would like to thank those men who have carried out the work on these roads.
People are now fully aware of those bad roads and things are never gong to be the same again. Action by myself, action by the Examiner, action by the media and magazines - spread it all over the country, and action by the people of Huddersfield has made the roads more 'visible' - no hiding place for pot-holes anymore!
