Letter: Mailbag - Plain views about Tesco.

Byline: PHILIP CHARLESWORTH

NO plainer statement about the Tesco affair could be made thanWilliam A Kirby's letter "The trouble with Tesco ..." (Mailbag Aug 15).

Supermarkets have come to stay and are useful to most of us. But there is a limit to their usefulness and the power they have come to exercise needs to be curbed.

Mr Kirby makes these points with force and clarity and his analysis should be taken on board, seriously, by the council. This is not a trivial matter. The talked-of sports centre at Springwood is a sprat to catch a mackerel.

Let Tesco expand their ship on its present site. We are already surfeited with supermarkets which can never be part of the "regeneration" of the town centre.

Tesco is already notorious for its mini-markets so cleverly introduced into our suburbs and villages nationwide. These can only destroy more local shopkeepers and genuine consumer choice.

Never let us forget that power corrupts.
