Letter: Mailbag - Jobs and benefits.

Byline: DC

I WAS sitting having a drink with a few elderly gentlemen when one said: "When I was young, working on shifts, you could go to town during the week and it was empty. Now it's full of people, young and old." Another replied: "They are all on benefits". A third came in with: "Where have all the jobs and people gone?". Then a discussion started about Huddersfield and district and the big employers of labour, ICI, David Brown Tractors, Brook Motors, John Crowther's at Milnsbridge and all the mills in the Colne Valley and many, many more. As the discussion came to a close the second man summed it all up: "I told you they are all on benefits."
