Letter: Mailbag - 'Handiwork' of criminals.

KAGEY'S letter "Try proper punishments" (Examiner November 5) on the wanton destruction of a pounds 100,000 First bus in a Hallo we'en prank struck a chord with me.

Those responsible no doubt had a terrific laugh; indeed they probably still are. I keep looking at the disfigured spire of St John's Church in Birkby and wonder if the copper thieves feel a similar glow of pride. Their handiwork on one of Huddersfield's finest churches can be seen from miles around.

Apparently they used a car to rip conductor cable from the spire that dislodged the top which then fell through the church roof. What a laugh.

The nicked copper is probably on its way to China right now, a boatload of iron railings, lead flashing, signalling cable, drain covers and burned buses. All destined for some dodgy scrap metal salvaging furnace. Isn't international trade great?

I'm no practising Christian, but if I were I'd be feeling distinctly un-Christian thoughts about what should be done to the perpetrators.

It is fanciful to assume that the villains responsible for these and the many other crimes that happen daily will be caught or effectively dealt with.
