Letter: Leighs needs layers.

Byline: Peter Savill

I HAVE to agree with Alan Thomson (Letters, June 24) about Great Leighs. The need to engage is vital and clearly Great Leighs is not yet there.

Having a bet is essential to me when I go racing and I love trying to get the best price. Unfortunately, Great Leighs as yet does not have on-course bookmakers, but does have a betting shop and Tote. I really missed trying to beat the 'old enemy' when I was there recently.

I disagree with Alan about getting near to the horses. He obviously didn't go to the parade ring, where you could almost touch the horses as they parade. The area between the temporary stand and the racetrack is as yet unfinished. When that's finished it will be possible to get nearer to the race as it takes place.

All in all, and crossing fingers, I feel sure that when the track gets on-course bookmakers, the atmosphere will improve.
