Letter: Help to get our news tapes.
Byline: DANNY COLLMANSir, - Your article, 'Seeing the Hazards of our Age' (Post, Oct 15), gives such an excellent description of the wonderful work done by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). Talking Newspapers for the Blind is a national organisation which produces audio tapes of newspaper articles for blind and visually-impaired people around Britain. There are dozens of local affiliated groups. The Birmingham Talking Newspaper Association is one such.
With your kind permission, and that of the editors of the other newspapers of The Post & Mail group, Birmingham Talking Newspaper produces weekly audio tapes of articles taken from the various newspapers of the group for the blind and visually-impaired of Birmingham.
We produce three separate tapes, for the north, central and south areas of the city, and we are constantly looking for competent readers who will volunteer to read your articles on to tape for our listeners.
We have teams of volunteers who do a regular six-to eight-weekly rota of meetings to produce these tapes. Some of these volunteers do the background administrative work, while others, who have demonstrated theircompetence, read the news. Then there is the person who operates the main recording equipment: the technician.
If any of your readers feel that they could offer their services, especially as reader or technician, we would love to hear from them.
