Letter: Driven to road rage.

Sir, - Yesterday morning I left my home at 4.10am - destination Heathrow.

Within 5 minutes, with not another car to be seen, and driving at 40mph (in a 30mph zone) I was aware of a police car following me. I could not believe it when the blue light and horns came on. I was roundly chastised for driving at such speed.

After he drew breath, I let him know in no uncertain terms that he was wasting police time and, I am afraid, used the old phrase 'Have you nothing better to do?'.

I told him that, over the last 12 months alone, my business had suffered over pounds 100,000 of crime and theft, and I just wished that there was even this level of interest from the police.

As I drove on, the Radio 4 news came on. I laughed when I heard Tony Blair speak on the massive increase in street crime, and how he planned to sort it out!
