Letter: Carsley is the key to our season; Midfielder has huge influence.

Byline: Roger Barnes

LEE CARSLEY has been a revelation this season and is the fulcrum to Everton's success.

If he can act as the playmaker to the rear of midfield and in front of the defence, he could be the missing link. It hinges on hard work, strong tackling and precision passing.

If Everton decide to play without James Beattie then they cannot rely upon balls into the middle, but must dominate from strength in midfield.

We should use our strikers as a flexible link and almost play as a midfield of six with no one playing by themselves up front. We have the players to undertake this role together with full-backs who can support from the flanks.

I suspect that the main problem lies with a need to be super fit.

Used effectively this set up could cause utter disruption in opponents' defences.
