Letter: Blair religion row.

Byline: Ian Payne

I PROTESTED in the highest terms during June 2007 about my dissatisfaction with Tony Blair's wish to become a Catholic. I still feel strongly about the whole matter.

In a letter from Archbishop Murphy O'Connor's secretary on June 26, 2007, I was told that Blair would need to go through a variety of issues relating to church discipline and doctrine, including the fact that there is always a period of instruction before anyone is accepted into the Catholic Church.

When I wrote to the Bishop of Birmingham, all I received was a thank you for my comments. Very diplomatic.

All I can say about Tony Blair becoming a Catholic is that I hope he never forgets the turmoil, distress and loss he has caused numerous families and individuals in Iraq, Afghanistan, the US and the UK since embarking on this disastrous war.
