Letter: Better the devil you know; AGENDA.

Byline: VERA BARKER

Dear Editor, We are being asked for our views about the fate of the Central Library. While I am no lover of the existing building, it makes a tolerable background to the square, and an attractive one all summer when filled with flowers.

We are not told what would replace it, but one thing is certain - to justify the cost of such a prime site would build an "iconic" (the in-word to justify a monstrosity) tall building that would dwarf our fine old Museum and Art Gallery, and our lovely restored Town Hall, and spoil the look of the square.

How would the Conservatoire be affected and the Adrian Boult Hall? Are we not being offered a pig in a poke? Better the devil you know ...
