Letter: Barometer of bizarre Brussels' directives.

Byline: JAMES BENTON

Dear Editor, - The EU fanatics say our barometers are dangerous. They say the mercury in them is a threat to our health and safety.

Barometers and thermometers do of course contain mercury, but it is encased in glass and presents only a fractional risk.

Britain's barometer industry is 400 years old and there is no recorded case of mercurial poisoning, in all that time, from the instruments.

Britain has the power to derogate this directive. Will this timid EU-scared Government reject it? Watch this space for even more bizarre Brussels' idiocy.
