Letter: A quick word; EUROPE.

Byline: JAMES BENTON

Dear Editor, The article by Gisela Stuart, is an alarming warning to everyone in the UK (What Blair must get for us at European summit, Post Perspective, June 21).

She is quite correct, successive governments have surrendered our sovereignty for 50 years to the United States of Europe.

Edward Heath gave away the fishing rights of the British Isles to, what was then, the EEC - terrified de Gaulle would not let us in this wretched European Community.

Harold Wilson gave us a phoney referendum in 1976. Financed with public and private money, it was the biggest swindle since the 18th century Southsea bubble. It was couched in such devious terms that many people voted yes, when they thought they were voting no.

Margaret Thatcher was sacked as PM because she said, quite correctly, Germany and France were taking over the union.

Mr Blair surrendered the Common Agricultural Policy and gave it back. French farmers laughed all the way to the bank.

I am neither a right-wing raver, nor a leftwing loony. I do not want my beautiful country to become an offshore island of the United States of Europe.
