Let there be light to celebrate Easter.

LIGHT will blaze out from Coventry Cath-edral this weekend to celebrate Easter.

At the same time, a bonfire will be lit in the old cathedral ruins in keeping with an ancient tradition.

The markers will be part of a spectacular Service of Light, which will take place at 8.15pm on Saturday.

The cathedral's Easter programme begins today, Maundy Thursday, with an evening Eucharist at 7.30pm celebrating the Last Supper Christ had with his disciples.

During this service, all lights in the cathedral will be extinguished, leaving only a flaming torch which will be taken out into the ruins and put out behind the altar. No candles will be lit in the cathedral between the end of this service and the bonfire on Easter eve.

The Good Friday service will start at the cathedral at 9am. At 7pm the Cathedral Choristers will sing music by Bach, Handel and Maxwell Davies.

On Saturday, the cathedral will be a place of quiet prayer from 10am to 5pm. Then the Service of Light will take place at 8.15pm.

Canon Christopher Burch said the Service of Light, starting with a bonfire in the cathedral ruins, was a throwback to an ancient church tradition.

He added: "An Easter candle will be lit from this bonfire and taken into the darkened new cathedral, where it will be used to light other candles, spreading light from one end to the other through the service.

"This act signifies the light of Christ, unextinguished even by death and its gift of life for all throughout the world."

Easter Sunday will begin with a dawn Eucharist at 6am in the cathedral ruins, followed by the cathedral Eucharist at 10.30am and an Easter evensong and procession at 5pm.
