Let there be light; Our great Easter DIY 4-page special.
House builders don't help much. Many new homes still come with rooms having just one light fitting dangling from the centre of the ceiling.
But a combination of uplighters, downlighters, table and occasional lamps can create the right atmosphere in every room.
The problem is that it creates mess when you start wiring in wall lights or low-level sockets.
But if you do plan to decorate or replaster it is well worth the effort. Bhs stores claim to be the largest lighting retailer in the country.
For dining rooms they suggest a ceiling fitting hanging low over the table to create an intimate pool of light.
Living rooms can benefit from table lamps or wall lamps which give indirect light or wash light across walls and ceiling.
Good light without shadows is essential in the kitchen while low-level lighting in the bedroom creates intimacy but should be bright enough for reading in bed.
