Let public examine council's finances.

I READ on an almost daily basis about the dire financial state of the public finances concerning Northumberland County Council, as well as others.

It would be nice if someone actually laid out just where the problems lay and what has been responsible for them.

It seems we are left to speculate or just blindly accept these statements about fiscal black holes in county budgets.

I presume there is a detailed balance sheet somewhere which is awash with red ink.

In these days of transparency and accountability it would be handy if we, the partners and investors in this endeavour, were able to scrutinise it and work out for ourselves where the problematic areas are.

After all we are being asked to plug these holes!

It does seem a strange business model when a cash-generative monopoly falters in this way, especially when I read recently it had to take extra staff on to process the unprecedented and unexpected levels of income flowing into its coffers.
