Let's look after our neighbours; Yousay IN YOUR OPINION...

I WAS disturbed to read of the seven older people targeted by distraction burglars in South Wales ("Elderly duped by conmen", October 7).

These crimes show contempt for older people who should be able to live in dignity and security, free of exploitation and any type of abuse.

We know from Crimestoppers UK that the average age of a victim of distraction burglary is 81. It is not just the loss of money or property that affects the victim; the crime may have a severe impact on their emotional and physical well-being.

We need to be vigilant to protect ourselves and others from burglaries and scams.

Age Cymru has produced a scams information card and a scams doorhanger with 10 "top tips" to avoid being scammed. They are available in English and Welsh from their website.

I would encourage people to introduce themselves to their older neighbours - it is important that we know who lives beside us and who we can trust. If we know who lives in our street it is easier to spot strangers.

At the Older People's Commission we are working to secure better protection for those who find themselves at risk of harm.

In Wales we value our older people who have contributed so much to society, and who continue to do so - let's all be active in keeping each other safe.
