Leroy Matthiesen.

Pax Christi USA is giving its highest honor, the Teacher of Peace Award, to Leroy Matthiesen, retired bishop of Amarillo, Texas. In the 1980s, Matthiesen received what he called a "personal wake-up call" when the Reaga, n administration announced that a factory outside Amarillo that was already assembling nuclear weapons would begin building neutron bombs. Matthiesen asked the people of his diocese not to work at the plant. For this, he suffered personal attacks and angry" denunciations locally and nationally. But the Texas bishops backed him, and ultimately the U.S. bishops wrote their watershed pastoral letter on the nuclear arms race, "The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response."
