For optical engineers and undergraduate and graduate students, Johnson, a student of Kingslake (Institute of Optics, U. of Rochester), who has taught optics education and research, updates the late author's text on lens design fundamentals to include all revised chapters, more examples and references, and more content to reflect changes in design since 1978. This revision includes a new overview chapter on aberrations, a rewritten chapter on automatic lens design, and an expanded chapter on mirrors and catadioptric systems that incorporates a variety of newer systems, some with eccentric pupils. Designer notes have been added. The book outlines the skills and knowledge needed in contemporary lens design and the development of practical lenses for different applications.
