Lenny to play Gaye.

ROCKER Lenny Kravitz is to play Marvin Gaye in a new biopic.

Kravitz, 48, will take his first lead role as the Prince of Motown.

Reports say Kravitz - who has had smaller parts in the likes of movie The Hunger Games and TV series Entourage alongside Mark Wahlberg - will portray Gaye during his battles with depression and drug addiction.

Gaye - whose hits included Sexual Healing and Let's Get It On - was shot dead by his father in 1984.

It's understood British film-maker Julien Temple, who has made documentaries about Kinks singer Ray Davies, Joe Strummer of The Clash and The Sex Pistols, will driect.

Previous attempts to make a film about Gaye - Motown Records' top-selling solo artist of the 1960s - have failed due to difficulties in obtaining music rights.
