Lend Us Your Ears! Mickey Mouse is On Parade in Hometown America for an Independence Day Weekend of a Lifetime.

BARTLESVILLE, Okla.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--July 3, 1999--

Mickey Mouse Kicks Off the Fourth of July Weekend With a

Spectacular Hometown Parade Celebration

What could make an Independence Day celebration more complete than fireworks, apple pie and BBQs? Mickey Mouse! Sharing his "can do" spirit, Mickey honors hometowns across America by commemorating the Independence Day holiday with the winners of the Mickey's Hometown Parade contest.

Mickey and his pals are among the first to celebrate Independence Day Saturday, kicking off the parade celebrations in Bartlesville. Throughout the remainder of July, Mickey and the gang will travel cross-country to Greenville, Ohio, on July 10; Pennsville, N.J., on July 17; and Pocatello, Idaho, on July 31.

Beth Cook, principal of Richard Kane Elementary in Bartlesville, was selected as the grand-prize winner of the Mickey's Hometown Parade contest for gathering 500 students, 63 faculty and 40 parents to create a "Bartlesville Loves Mickey" human formation.

This grand-prize event features a fantastic Disney parade with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy and Pluto parading down the main street in Bartlesville, among enthusiastic Mickey fans clad in spirited red, white and blue.

The parade will be followed by a night-time fireworks extravaganza to classic Disney tunes. Refurbished historic Disney cars, local marching bands, dance troupes, local volunteers and the contest winners are starring in this colorful "Hometown Fair" parade with versions of homespun activities like pie-baking contests, beauty pageants and dog shows.

"What better way to kick off the Independence Day weekend in an American hometown than with a parade featuring the world's greatest entertainer, Mickey Mouse?" asked Carla Punsalan, Disney spokesperson for Mickey's Hometown Parades.

"We received more than 130,000 entries this year and awarded the parades to entrants who most creatively displayed the spirit of their hometown, proving they have Mickey's `can do' spirit."

This year's tour makes its popular return after the first Mickey's Hometown Parade celebrations showed how people all over the country love Mickey Mouse, with hundreds of thousands of spirited fans attending parades across the United States.

Last summer, nearly 100,000 people visited Platteville, Wis., (population 10,000) just to see Mickey's first Hometown Parade Celebration!

In March 1999, contestants entered to win the Mickey's Hometown Parade contest at Wal-Mart stores across the United States by submitting essays, videos and other creative methods illustrating Mickey Mouse's hometown spirit.

Winners were selected based on the originality and creativity of their entry, which captured the spirit of their hometown. It's the "not-to-be missed" event of the summer!
