Legislators rally behind Tsai for Taiwan presidency re-election.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators have backed President Tsai Ing-wen's re-election bid, following the launch of former premier William Lai's 2020 campaign.

The DPP's Chen Ming-wen, Weng Chang-liang and Lo Chih-cheng sent messages of support on Facebook, emphasizing the need for party unity.

Lo wrote: 'When the DPP was on its last breath in 2008, Tsai Ing-wen picked the party off its feet and after eight years of toil returned it to power. Criticizing Tsai could lead to a loss of political power, do not take our 2016 victory for granted.'

Tsai's ratings spiked recently after taking a hardline stance against Beijing's calls for unification talks. Polls conducted in February, however, suggest her chances of being re-elected in 2020 could be slim if pitted against KMT rivals Eric Chu and Han Kuo-yu, or Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je.

A separate poll conducted by the independence-leaning think tank Taiwan Brain Trust (TBT) indicates William Lai would have a much better chance of success and likely beat Chu and KMT Chairman Wu Den-yih.

Chen Ming-wen wrote that Tsai has garnered support from the international community, despite provocation from China. She has promoted domestic reforms and created a better environment for the next generation, he added.

'We must unite during difficult times, division will lead to loss,' Chen wrote.

The DPP primary election is set to be a standoff between Tsai and Lai. Lai said he would resolutely support Tsai if she won the primary.
