Legionnaire's outbreak claims a second victim.

A second person has died after contracting legionnaire's disease in an outbreak which affected 28 people.

The woman, in her 50s, was the second person to be struck down by the disease in Hereford four weeks ago and had been in hospital ever since.

Health officials last night confirmed she died on Monday night and had other health complications.

Her death came on the same day two more cases of the bug were diagnosed.

A man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s became the latest people to be affected by the outbreak.

Experts said the new cases were consistent with them having acquired the disease before the source of the bacteria was closed.

A statement issued by Health Protection Agency, Herefordshire County Council and the Herefordshire Primary Care Trust last night said: 'Sadly the second person originally diagnosed with legionnaire's disease died yesterday evening.

'The lady, who was in her 50s and who had other medical problems, had been in hospital for a month.

'No new cases of legionnaire's disease have been confirmed and the total remains at 28.'

Andrew Tector, head of environmental health and trading standards, stressed that it was safe for people to visit Hereford after the source of the disease was located.
