Legal door; COMMENT The policy of honesty. The might of right. The expediency of principle.

KIRKLEES Council's bid to have seven village libraries run by volunteers could now be running into problems. A similar plan from Surrey County Council has been ruled unlawful by the High Court in London and our council has said in the past that it is loathe to end up involved in costly appeals or court cases.

Campaigners here say it remains unclear what will happen if insufficient people step forward to staff the libraries and claim the consultation has been poor. So it seems a legal door may now be ajar to stop the plans for Denby Dale, Shepley, Honley, Golcar, Slaithwaite, Lepton and Kirkheaton libraries. If someone here was to push that legal door in the courts perhaps things could start to take a very different turn.
