Lee Frazier.

St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center Executive Vice President

ALL HIS LIFE, LEE FRAZIER has been a pioneer.

It began when he was the first black athlete to play for Loyola University in New Orleans in 1965. When he was 25, he became the first black executive director at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, a 1,800-bed hospital with 2,700 employees.

He was also the first lay director at the hospital, operated for more than 220 years by the Daughters of Charity. And he was the first product of Tulane University, where he finished his graduate work, to head the hospital.

"That launched my career on many different fronts," Frazier says.

His career has stretched beyond hospital administration to entrepreneurship and public service. After serving as chief executive of Harlem Hospital in New York in the late '70s, Frazier returned to New Orleans as a part owner of New Orleans General Hospital.

He has served as a Louisiana state representative in a district with an 80 percent white population, and in 1983 was voted "Legislator of the Year."

Frazier has been executive vice president at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center since 1989. He travels the state in search of hospitals interested in affiliating with St. Vincent.

"I came to Little Rock because of the excellent health community here and because so many people are involved in making things right in the city," Frazier says.
