BEIRUT: As the glitterati of the showbiz world gathered in Los Angeles Sunday for the Academy Awards, Lebanon was represented not only in its nomination but also by the dresses adorning the red carpet. Although it didn't win, Lebanese movie "The Insult" (the Arabic-language title translates as "Case No. 23") made history after it was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film Category, in a first for the country.
"The Insult," the creation of writer-director Ziad Doueiri, lost to Chile's "A Fantastic Woman." Nevertheless, the cast, including Doueiri, Adel Karam, Rita Hayek, Diamand Abou Abboud and Joelle Touma, appeared to be enjoying every moment, with Hayek, Abou Abboud and Touma lighting up the red carpet in their Elie Saab dresses.
Other attendees, too, called on Saab to give them a fashion edge. The designer's creations have become something of an inevitable part of the Hollywood glam on display at one of the industry's biggest annual events.
Saab dressed American actress Zoey Deutch in a beaded, tiered gown in grey-lilac, with vintage allure and a deep V-neckline.
Meanwhile, Australian actress Abbie Cornish turned heads in a gold Elie Saab gown with cold-shoulder sleeves and a metallic belt.
But Saab had some competition on the runway, with other Lebanese designers threatening to steal his thunder. New York-based designer Reem Acra dressed award winner Allison Janney in a dramatic scarlet gown, ensuring she cut a striking figure on her big day.
Janney complimented the dress, with its plunging neckline and draping split sleeves, with ample diamonds -- prompting jaws to drop as she took the stage after winning the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "I, Tonya."
Acra had another red carpet win with the long, deep blue dress worn by Helen Mirren, who jazzed up the gown's modest neckline and long sleeves with a matching necklace and earrings.
A design by Zuhair Murad also made an appearance, with a radiant Gina Rodriguez donning a blush pink dress adorned with silver details, its deep neckline dropping to a voluminous, ethereal skirt.
