A 3G agreement has been signed by Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (Huawei), a provider of next-generation telecomms networks, with Leap Wireless International Inc (Nasdaq:LEAP), a provider of wireless communications services.
Leap will deploy third-generation CDMA solutions from Huawei under the terms of the agreement, which is the first commercial contract between the two companies. Leap is to deploy technology from Huawei with its Cricket wireless services in Spokane, Washington; Boise, Idaho; and Reno, Nevada; in the US.
The contract incorporates a CDMA2000 network with 1xEV-DO Rev A capable BTS from Huawei and will include Huawei's Air Bridge BSC6600, SoftX3000-Softswitch, High Capacity BTS 3606 and UMG8900-Universal Media Gateway.
The deployment is expected to support 1xEV-DO Rev 0 and Rev A, while reducing the long-distance backhaul and providing IP telephony benefits in terms of quality of service, reliability, security and cost-effective networking.
The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
