Leaking roof forces mall gym to shut.

A LEAKING roof caused a gym to shut down and left shoppers dodging puddles at one of Bahrain's biggest malls yesterday.

Bahrain Mall, which was damaged by fire in October and had its central canopy torn by strong winds the following month, has now suffered leaks due to yesterday's heavy showers.

Rainwater caused a section of the ceiling to collapse in Dream Body Centre's gym area, forcing it to close for the rest of the day.

"There's a section, a very small section, of ceiling where the boards collapsed because water dripped through," mall manager Michael Simmelink told the GDN.

"It's right at the end of the premises but the problem is that it's unsightly and unfortunately it's in the gym area.

"They can't fix it while it's raining so they chose to close for the day, then we can at least let the rain stop and go in and put in some kind of fix.

"It looks bad but it's not the whole ceiling. It's the section of the boards between their premises and the passage outside, right above it is where the work was going on."

Repairs on the roof have been underway since strong winds tore a hole in the mall's canopy on November 20.

But a replacement canopy took a long time to manufacture, according to Mr Simmelink.

Repairs have been held up because work can only be done to one section of the roof at a time.

"We started with the roof repairs a few days ago because that was when the material arrived but now there are some openings where the canopy used to be and the water's dripping through a bit," he added.

"We have to manage it, teams of people are cleaning it up and hopefully by tomorrow the rains will have stopped.

"We have just got to catch the drips and mop that up. It's just one of those things, we have to manage it - we can't do anything else."

Depending on the weather, the majority of repairs are expected to complete later this month and the canopy replacement will be in place by mid-February, added Mr Simmelink.
