Leading article: Leave them in London.

WHEN it comes to prestige projects like the National Stadium, London is quick to demand the biggest slice of the cake.

Jealous city bosses enlist the aid of the capital's media mafia and sneer at any suggestion that the Midlands should have any share of the booty.

It's a different kettle of fish when it comes to the homeless. The capital is offering them bribes of pounds 1,500 each to clear off up the M40 to stay with us.

Doubtless London can breathe a deep sigh of relief. Not only are they out of sight, out of mind, but they are at last someone else's problem. Ours.

We have every sympathy for the homeless but to hand out council houses to newcomers from London at a time when we don't have enough for our own is nonsensical.

There are hundreds of people in the Midlands without a home. There are still more unable to afford that first step on the property ladder because of high prices.

Sorry, but this really is a case where charity should begin at home.
