Leader recovers from op.

SANDWELL Council leader Bill Thomas is recovering after undergoing a heart valve replacement operation in a Birmingham hospital.

Coun Thomas, aged 67, underwent the operation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Monday.

Previously he had been receiving treatment for nearly two months at Sandwell General Hospital.

Deputy leader Coun Pauline Hinton, who is sharing his duties with fellow deputy leader Coun Steve Eling, said: "I am delighted to say that Coun Thomas came through the surgery without a hitch.

"He is already sitting up and has told visitors that he is feeling much better and is looking forward to getting back to his council duties."

Coun Hinton said Coun Thomas was hoping to be allowed home in the next few weeks.
