Leader's wives; Sarah in G8 showdown.

SHE usually favours the same sombre colour as her surname, so Sarah Brown's jaunty outfit caused a stir in Italy yesterday.

The PM's wife, wearing a bright striped skirt and red heels, joined other world leaders' wives for a day out in Rome - while their husbands thrashed out the finer points of climate change and North Korea on the first day of the G8 summit.

The girls all wore their glad rags - US First Lady Michelle Obama in a yellow shift - for a three-course lunch followed by a tour of the Capitoline museums.

At a private 30-minute meeting with the Pope, Sarah, 45, was also presented with the Annual Papal Medal.

We wonder whether His Holiness liked her bold new look..

YES By AMBER MORALES, Fashion Director CIAO, bella!

Nautical stripes, a natty necklace and a nude-coloured blouse - Sarah Brown ticks off three key trends with a chic outfit that is perfect for a trip to one of the world's style capitals. That A-line skirt flatters her figure, while the red and white stripes go nicely with her crisp blouse.

And the slingbacks have improved her posture. Please don't let this new look be just a Roman Holiday, Sarah.

NO By LEANNE DOWN, Fashion Intern SARAH Brown gets it all so wrong for once, with this awful fashion faux pas. Red slingbacks teamed with a striped, pleated skirt make her look more like a Rocket ice-lolly than the PM's wife. That frumpy, ill-fitting blouse does nothing to flatter her apple shape.

And the unflattering bow on her waistband just makes her tummy seem bloated. It may be red, white and blue, but this is hardly flying the style flag for Britain.
