It doesn't take much to get Radio 4's John Humphrys riled but on Friday's Today he was incandescent over the fact that a postal ballot mix-up had robbed him of his right to vote.

As he fulminated on air Mariella Frostrup rang in to say the same thing had happened to her. A mother writing to a newspaper detailed the half-dozen postal votes she could use if she chose, none of them dishonestly acquired but falling into her hands just the same.

Remember this ... the people who will fraudulently obtain extra votes will be the very people you would not want to wield increased power at the ballot box. The law- abiding will play by the rules.
