Law on pest-control firms a welcome move.

In the past three years, several deaths have taken place in the emirates as a result of incorrect use of pesticides, resulting in harmful and dangerous chemicals being used in households. Whether through the use of illegal chemicals or by not ensuring proper ventilation, these deaths were largely avoidable.

Staff who are hired by pest control companies must have adequate training to ensure they know how to use the pesticides. And the workers themselves need to be protected while using the chemicals on a daily basis. Adequate safety measures need to be followed for the storage, carriage and usage of these chemicals. They also need to be approved by regulators.

When it comes to their use in homes, how the pesticides are applied is critical. So too is the timing. It is also important that those residing in households where pesticides are applied are well-informed about correct after-application procedures that need to be followed.

The chemicals need to be safe, their usage must be safe and those who use them need to be kept safe.

That is why Dubai's law on pest control companies, requiring full compliance and strict controls, is a welcome step. Others should follow suit.
