Launches help maintain lip makeup's momentum.

NEW YORK -- Sales in the lip segment in the cosmetics category were up 6.19% fromayear ago, according to IRI, for the 12week period that ended August 9. Total sales in the category during that period topped $81 million. While lipstick had the largest sales volume--$60.7 million, up 7.2%--lip treatment, which reached sales of $417,139, experienced a significant increase from last year at 19.63%.

New products driving sales include the LOreal Paris Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Pure Reds Lipcolour.

Responding to the popularity of the red lip look, L'Oreal Paris introduced the collection of six lip colors inspired by the brand's spokeswomen. Designed to offer a red for every woman, each shade was custom-created to complement individual skin tones and preferences.

"For the first time, Colour Riche offers a collection of rich matte shades formulated with pure color pigments, velvet spheres and jojoba oil for intensely matte red lips with a luxuriously creamy, soft feel," says the company.

The shades are: Julianne's Red (named for Julianne Moore), Eva's (Langoria) Red, Freida's (Pinto) Red, Liya's (Kebede) Red, Blake's (Lively) Red and Zoe's (Saldana) Red.

Also fueling category gains was LOreal Infallible (up 94%) and wet n wild MegaLast from Markwins International Inc. (up 15%).

Markwins this year bought Lip Smacker and Bonne Bell, and the company says it will continue to embrace the flavors, formulations, licensed partnerships and "Made in USA" standards that have made Lip Smacker a beloved brand.

As a next step, Markwins intends to market to a broader audience, including Millennial. From an innovation perspective, the company will be releasing tinted and nontinted flavors; a new lip gloss with a cooling factor; and a stackable, collectible lip gloss.

For its part, Revlon, maker of No. 1 lipstick Super Lustrous, has raised its profile with the second phase of its new philanthropic platform designed to have a greater impact on women's health initiatives. The Revlon LOVE IS ON Million Dollar Challenge is inviting charities dedicated to three leading health issues facing women today --women's cancers, heart disease and diabetes--to participate in an online fund-raising challenge. The charity that raises the most donations for its cause over the course of six weeks will win an additional $1 million from Revlon.

Black Opal Beauty, meanwhile, has introduced four lip shades into its signature Color Splash Luxe Creme and Luxe Matte lipstick collections. These hydrating lip shades are enhanced with moisture-binding formulas, the company says, giving lips "a fuller look and feel while providing long-lasting, intense color."

Black Opal Color Splurge Lipsticks are formulated to nourish, moisturize and condition lips, and all are infused with vitamins A, C and E to provide superior antioxidant protection and smooth finish. The collection is available in selected Walmart, CVS/pharmacy, Rite Aid Corp., Duane Reade and beauty supply stores, and online at www. blackopalbeauty.com.

In other news on the lip care front, Mwah, which refers to itself as the "new, natural alternative to the average lip balm," unveiled a new line of balms that the company says "offers an innovative, effective, fresh and healthy spin on lip care."

The line includes: Lip-conditioning Slider Tub (suggested retail price of $3.99) in Coconut Chick, Mango Tango and Sweet Tart flavors; Lip Balm Stick ($1.99 per single, $4.99 per three-pack) in Creamsicle, Mango Madness and Strawberry Sweetheart flavors; and Lip Gloss ($2.99) in Berrylicious, Peachy Keen and Sugar Lips.

Mwah says its lip care products are made of natural, highly effective ingredients, free of harmful chemicals and preservatives and never tested on animals, and they are produced in a 100% solar-powered facility in Southern California The current collection includes three lip balm products: a lip-conditioning slider tub, a stick balm and a gloss, all available in a variety of flavors.

According to Clio, the Mwah line fills a void in the lip balm marketplace by combining fresh, natural chemistry with innovative design, bold flavors and colorful style while being all natural and using only the finest ingredients, including mango butter, shea butter and macadamia nut oil.
