Latest snack bars provide wholesome options.
NEW YORK -- There's no shortage of healthy choices when it comes to snack bars, as evidenced by some recent product introductions.
KIND Healthy Snacks has entered the granola bar segment with KIND Healthy Grains Bars. The "chewy with a crunch" granola bars are made from five super grains mixed with ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, toasted coconut flakes and dark chocolate chunks.
Each bar contains 19 to 22 grams of whole grains (amaranth, quinoa, millet, buckwheat and gluten-free oats), a key source of fiber and protein. They come in five varieties--Dark Chocolate Chunk, Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate, Oats & Honey with Toasted Coconut, Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt, and Vanilla Blueberry--and retail for $3.99 to $4.29 per box of five bars in single flavors.
Kellogg Co. has unveiled Special K Nourish snack bars and hot cereal, the brand's first-ever products with quinoa. Special K Nourish products are made with a multigrain blend of superfoods, including quinoa, oats and barley, and topped with dried fruit and nuts. They have 7 to 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and less than 200 calories.
The nutrition bars are available in Dark Chocolate Nut Delight, Cranberry Almond and Lemon Twist varieties, while the hot cereal comes in Maple Brown Sugar Crunch, Cranberry Almond and Cinnamon Raisin Pecan flavors. Special K Nourish nutrition bars are sold in boxes of five for $6.49, and the hot cereals come in two-count packages for $2.29.
Also premiering a quinoa offering is Quaker, with its new Harvest Crunch Quinoa Granola Bars in Canada. The company said the product is its only snack featuring the grain as its star ingredient. The bars are made with quinoa, 100% Canadian oats, wheat, brown rice, almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts and milk chocolate. Blending sweet and salty tastes with chewy and crispy textures, the bar comes in a Chocolate Nut Medley flavor and has 9 grams of whole grains per serving. Meanwhile, South Beach Diet has added South Beach Diet Protein-Fit Bars and the South Beach Diet Snack Bar.
The brand's highest-protein bars, ProteinFit bars have 16 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber and come in Vanilla Caramel and Honey Peanut flavors, both with a Greek yogurt coating. The Chocolate Caramel Nut Snack Bar has 100 calories and provides 6 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber.
