Last crumbs of comfort for Nick.

Byline: matt withers

HAPPY anniversary Nick Bourne!

It's 10 years since the Conservative leader took the helm of his party in Cardiff Bay.

Ten years in which they have risen from being without a single MP and an attitude to devolution best described as "lukewarm", to a party which gained the largest number of votes in this year's European election.

So let's hope he enjoys his cake. Because the next couple of years might just be a bit more trying.

Next year, barring a political earthquake, the Tories will be in government in Westminster. And they might put the kibosh on any referendum on further powers for the Assembly.

And, dominating the Welsh Affairs Select Committee as they will, they might stop signing off on Assembly laws.

And then cuddly Mr Bourne, with all the hard work he's put into making the Welsh party pro-devolution, will be in a very difficult position indeed.
